Towe Ressman

Towe Ressman, VP of Design at Husqvarna will be opening the IIoT Strategies Summit 2019 with her keynote –  Design-driven development in times of wickedness.

We managed to catch up with Towe Ressman for a few minutes recently to ask her about her session and what she thinks the future of IIoT in manufacturing looks like. Read our interview here.

Can you give us an overview of what our attendees can expect from your session?
In essence, it is about the challenge we are all up for. How we must work differently, with too many questions and no right answers. And where Design Thinking as a methodology has emerged as one of the few means to move this forward in a shared transparent way across organizations and functions.

What are the core messages that delegates can expect to take away from your session?
I will point to the differences between product producing companies compared to any other company in the era of digitalization and exemplify with a few concrete examples and methods based on our digital journey, what we have done, where we are and how we are moving forward.

Your Smart Garden product takes smart homes outside – can you tell us a little about this?
Right, our Smart system with products and sensors optimize and adjust for the garden space which the user control through the Smart app wherever they are. We will continue to drive leadership here and the smart living is and will even more so effect what we do in the garden space, which is exciting and open up for new opportunities. I talk more about this as promised

You have worked at some of the world biggest most innovative brands including Volvo and Electrolux, and now Husqvarna Group. Is there any standout moment in your career that you look back on and think THAT was amazing we really made something special there?

One was for sure the first concept design. It was the Volvo XC 90, the first SUV, and I designed the dashboard. To see the result at the Geneva Motor show was an amazing moment.

Another more recent “moment” was when we launched the Husqvarna Solea concept at the Silent City event in 2017. It is amazing when great design evokes the wow feeling among the audience.

And… is there any product on the market that you wish you had worked on?
If I can pick one, it is the first I-phone. This product was truly disruptive through its design and usability. It did set the benchmark for the industry and changed human behaviours and society worldwide.

What do you think the future holds for IoT and product design?
A lot, IoT has made me engaged as a designer, digital has for a long time been about the narrow, IoT opens up for the products beyond the physical. Going forward this will give design the position and focus it deserves.
